The hunters from the previous episode have a new prey, a member of species 8472. Voyager has encountered these species before, in the Season 3 finale/Season 4 opener "Scorpion" when they were at war with the Borg. The hunters have met their match this time and Voyager is caught in the middle of the conflict. Once in a while, the writers throw us a episode that is a classic horror themed thriller and this is one of them.
An interesting side plot involves Seven and Captain Janeway in a battle of wills. It provides a fascinating insight into how her human personality is developing and how she is discovering her individuality
