The Enterprise encounters an older version of itself that causes it to transform into an alternate version of itself, one that exists in an universe at war. The alt-Enterprise is longer a peaceful ship of exploration but a battleship and billions have died in the war.
Alternate realities are a staple of almost every Star Trek series and they are often very good, no exceptions here.
